French’s Fancy Dress has recently opened in Church Street in Uckfield. Owner Donna French hires out fancy dress costumes and sells a wide range of accessories. She has, up till now, been running the business on a small scale from home, mainly just for family and friends, but has recently decided to take the plunge and expand into premises.
Having seen the shop in Church Street become available, Donna said that she realised it would be suitable for her new venture. So she set about securing the rent, then decorate the premises, with the help of her husband Doug. By the end of May she was ready to move in.
There are three floors to the shop. Donna has dedicated the ground floor to items and accessories for sale, while the 2nd and 3rd floors are filled with stock to hire.
What’s available to hire?
Clothes and accessories are available from the 1920s through the decades to the 1990’s. There are also beautifully detailed historic costumes, including Tudor, Elizabethan, Edwardian and Victorian outfits. For those who want ‘themed’ outfits, for example The Spice Girls or Harry Potter, those are available too.
She has a wide range of hats and other accessories for absolutely every outfit. If items are not in stock, they can be ordered for next day pick up.
This is the first shop of its kind in Uckfield, and Donna made her first sale on the day it opened.
Donna keeps up to date with what’s popular in fancy dress. The reality tv show Love Island is helping with sales of grass skirts and flower garlands as customers have Hawaiian themed parties. She has also supplied a bearded lady costume following the popularity of the film ‘The Greatest Showman’.
