Sue talks to Lauren, who together with her husband Towfique, own Amira’s Kitchen in Grange Road. So, 7 months in, how is the business going?
Originally from Haywards Heath, they decided to come to Uckfield to set up their restaurant. When the property in Grange Road became available, they liked the size and character of the building. So they secured it and set out on their journey to redecorate and make it the restaurant it is now.
Since the opening of Amira’s Kitchen last December (2017), Lauren said that Uckfield had been very welcoming and that they are very pleased with their first few months. The addition of the delivery service has also proved very popular. It currently covers Uckfield and its surrounding villages, and the plan is to go further afield. Dishes are also available to collect.
What food does Amira’s Kitchen offer?
There is a variety of food on offer including Street Food – a tapas-style menu of small dishes designed to share (Bangladesh) and High Chai (Indian version of afternoon tea).
Asking what was different about their restaurant, Lauren said their menu wasn’t what you will typically find in other Bangladeshi & Indian restaurants. All dishes are freshly made to order and are designed by their head chef, using traditional ingredients and methods. They also allow for flexibility, so certain ingredients can be changed.
Popular dishes include the Panjabi Style Lamb Shank and Murgh Zafrani.
How did the logo come about?
Evidently, the rickshaw in their logo is a traditional method of transport in Bangladesh, so it seemed a natural choice. And the cartoon character is their daughter, Amira, hence the name of the restaurant.
Amira’s Kitchen are open Tuesday to Thursday 5.30 – 10pm, Friday 5.30 – 10.30pm, Saturdays 1 – 10.30pm, and Sundays 1 – 10pm. They are closed Mondays. To book your table or take away, visit Amira’s Kitchen.
